The National Cultural Foundationis reminding the public that the deadline for nominations forthe 2002 Arts Awards is this Friday.

The awards recognize Caymaniansand residents, individuals and organisations for their contributionsto the cultural heritage and the development of Caymanian arts.Nominations must be received in writing by 4:30pm Friday 30 August;they may be mailed to CNCF at PO Box 30201, SMB, faxed to 949-4519or delivered to their offices at the Harquail Theatre.

Specifically, nominationsare being invited for the Radley Gourzong Award, which is conferredon individuals or groups whose work or work with others has, inthe long term, made an outstanding contribution to the exploration,promotion or preservation of Caymanian cultural heritage. Thoseeligible will have demonstrated a longstanding commitment to promoting,sustaining or further developing a Caymanian artistic tradition-forexample, in dance, music, craft-or produced a substantial bodyof work over time which demonstrates a local cultural focus and/ordraws on local artistic traditions, techniques or materials. Orelse, through their collective works, they will have helped toadvance appreciation of our local cultural heritage, local artforms, and/or awareness and understanding of local cultural issues.

To be considered for theCultural Heritage Award, the individual or group must, througha single work or series of works in the short / medium term, havecontributed significantly to the exploration, promotion or preservationof Caymanian cultural heritage. They will have produced work thatmakes a significant contribution to promoting, sustaining or furtherdeveloping a Caymanian artistic tradition. They will also be eligibleif their work promotes the artistic integrity of work with a localcultural focus, draws on local cultural traditions, techniquesand materials, or in a significant way, promotes thought and discussionon local cultural issues.

Past winners in the heritagecategories have included Gladwyn Bush (Visual Art), Radley Gourzong& the Happy Boys and "Aunt Julia" Hydes (TraditionalMusic), Captain Keith Tibbetts (Role Model), East End QuadrilleDancers and Vernicia Watler (Traditional Dance), Harold Banksand Ira Walton (Model Boat Building), Carmen Conolly (Arts &Craft), and Cayman Islands Seafarers Association (Seafaring Tradition).

The arts awards gala, atwhich recipients are presented with their trophies, takes placeat the Harquail Theatre in December.
