Amateur artists will have the opportunityto hone their skills in three new visual arts classes organisedby the National Gallery and Community College.
Beginning Monday, September 9, instructorsSarah Sessions, Vicki Tarrant and Patrick Broderick will leadclasses in printmaking, drawing and photography for students ofall experience-levels.
Professional artist Vicki Tarrant, who holdsart degrees from the United Kingdom, will present the foundationdrawing course. This class will focus on different drawing techniquesand media, using still life work, as well as life drawing. Itis the first time that regular life drawing lessons will be offeredin the Cayman Islands.
The sessions, Ms Tarrant says, will providea base for developing participants' experiences with all otherart mediums. Topics that will be addressed include building theindividual's artistic perspective, or how artists see and interpretwhat they see on paper. Art history and aesthetic theory willbe included. Classes will take place on Mondays, during the dayand the evening.
Meanwhile, the printmaking course with SarahSessions will focus on linocut printing, which is the most sculpturalprintmaking technique. Linocut is the most direct way to createprints as it does not rely on mechanical processes. The classwill introduce participants to the techniques of design and transfer,from cutting to printing the linoleum. Students will design andproduce their own print editions, using non-toxic materials andemploying both one-colour and combined colour techniques.
Ms Sessions has a fine-arts degree in printmakingfrom the United States, and assists the National Gallery withthe Art Magnet youth development programme. Her class will beoffered on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

In addition the National Gallery's Curatorof Photography Patrick Broderick will present classes for photographyaficionadoes that will be offered on Thursdays, during the daytimeand the evenings.
Mr Broderick says the class offer buddingphotographers "a balance between aesthetics and technique."Lessons will cover black and white photography, outdoor and studiolighting, "seeing like a camera," as well as manipulatingthe lens, exposure times, developing the negative, printing andother special techniques.
Tuition for the 14-week programme is $250,which covers three hours of instruction each week and the costof materials. Space is limited.
