Commemorative T-Shirt FundRaiser

At a time when the local funding of not-for-profitprojects and programmes is coming under pressure, charitable organisationshave to be inventive and creative in their fund raising pursuits.

Cayman Maritime has to be even more inventivein the creation of newer types of projects that are being presentedto the limited number of potential local sponsors.

"A T-shirt is hardly a new or originalconcept, but a rare, commemorative Catboat stamp on that T-shirt,especially in limited quantities is a little different and thatis what we are offering," a release from the Cayman Maritimeand the Cayman Catboat Club said.

The Club is seeking the sponsorship of fourCatboat designs on a limited number of T-shirts being producedby Cayman Screen Prints.

The income from both the original donationand the products sold will be used in the sponsorship of proposedCatboat Skills Training Programme, the Cayman Maritime administrationexpenses and to restock other retail items such as replicationsof maritime artifacts (by Wood Works Ltd.).

The release said that the Catboat SkillsTraining Programme proposal is available for your perusal butin a nutshell Cayman Maritime will offer courses in Catboat constructionto 18 disadvantaged persons.

The construction will be in two areas, traditionaland contemporary. The traditional construction will be taughtby Mr. Arunah Powery, whose brother Andrew Powery was given thefirst Cayman Maritime Achievement Award by the Honourable McKeevaBush during the Dart Christmas Catboat Regatta last year.

The contemporary instruction will be conductedby Mr. Waldo Parchment, who will be attending lessons at the WoodenBoatSchool in Brooklin, Maine the first two weeks of September.

The contemporary design is still to be developedas a very fast planing hull with a centre-board that has beencreated to be light and unsinkable but to look like a Cayman Catboat.

"The course will also go into the areasof sailing and marketing as we are looking for some of the studentsto graduate and start a business of Catboat construction for thedemand, that we foresee, for these very popular Caymanian vessels,"the release added.
