Military Cylinder Foundon Bodden Town Beach

A cylinder with the words "if found,contact US Military or police" stamped on its side washedup on a Bodden Town beach and was found Wednesday by a resident,according to 911 Emergency Communications.

Following discussions with the US Militaryin Jamaica, the cylinder is believed to be a flare from a militaryaircraft, used primarily at night, said 911 Manager Juliette Gooding-Ebanks.

As the cylinder contains an explosive material,Quarry Products was contacted to assist with detonating the device.The cylinder was known to contain phosphorous, but other materialswere unconfirmed, she noted.

A male resident discovered the cylinder,measuring 18 to 24 inches in length and 4 to 6 inches in diameter,on a beach in the Midland Acres vicinity. After picking it up,the man noticed that smoke was issuing from the cylinder and immediatelycalled 911, at 2:06 p.m., Mrs. Gooding-Ebanks said.

A male at the scene was taken to the CaymanIslands Hospital for observation, as he inhaled some of the smokeand was complaining of minor throat irritation.
