Need for a Cadet Corp

Due to the very disturbing trend behaviourdeveloping among the young people in this island, it seems thatan increasing number of residents and leading citizens have nowaccepted that there is need for introduction of a structured anddisciplined organisation that will contribute positively to thedevelopment of the youth.

At a recent meeting of the Cayman Islands Seafarers' Associationa programme was proposed by a teacher, which is in keeping withthe culture, history and traditions of the Cayman Islands.

The programme proposed is based on the Navy Sea Cadet Corp ofthe USA, or similar organisations which have been successfullyoperated for a long time in several countries. In the absenceof any standing (or even a part time) military service, the calibreof personnel equipped with the training and experience necessaryto undertake positions will be found in the Police, Fire and PrisonServices.

Goals will be to:

(1) Build in every boy and girl a sense of patriotism, courage,self-reliance, confidence;
(2) Develop skills in and maritime subjects;
(3) Instill an appreciation of Caymanian history, customs andtraditions.
(4) Increase the advancement of cadets who may choose a maritimecareer,
(5) Instill the importance and prestige of discipline,

The effectiveness will be determined by support from the community,parents, and quality of leadership and staff.

Anyone interested in supporting the programme is invited to writeto: CISA
