Inter-Primary School SwimMeet 2000
Bodden Town wins 'Spirit' Award, Cayman Prep most points
The Inter-Primary Schools turned out fora loud, fun, somewhat chaotic day of swim competition at the Lion'sPool Wed Nov. 28th. 275 athletes participated in the event for6-12 year olds, representing 9 schools including a combined CaymanBrac team.
Cayman Prep came away yet again with the most points, Bodden Towntook the "Spirit" award. Second place was First BaptistChristian School, 3rd went to St. Ignatius Prepatory School.
Anytime there is nearly 500 people on a pool deck it seems chaotic, but the event went off without a hitch, after a slightly delayed(15min) start. Six lanes of 48 events, each with 2-5 heats madefor a lot of action. Kickboard races were included, and the dayended with a full slate of relay races.
P.E. teachers acted as coaches, other teachers helped make surecompetitors were where they were supposed to be. Parents stoppedby for a few minutes and stayed longer, enjoying the action andfun atmosphere.
The day was a good example of the "everyone-wins-by- participatingphilosophy of swim meetsí" advocated by the coachesat the Lions Pool. The event started with proper swim meet warm-upallowing everyone to "touch the ball". So many competitorsand heats made it an accomplishment to enter the water at theright time; part of the fun was mixing with all the others. Doingwell in their heat was enough to make most youngsters' day.
Computer generated heat sheets and marshalling cards helped theorganizational behemoth. Parents and teachers served as timers,as proper back up to the electronic timing system and computersoftware, which was purchased 6 years ago by private sources.
As the 2pm finish time goal approached, the medley relay racesconcluded, leaving only the freestyle relays. Participants wereso keen to continue, they were run also. 61 mixed-sex relay teams, including the 5 & 6 year olds, meant 244 children got to participatein the "team" fun. Again good pre-organization helpedthat run smoothly.
The Brac team did especially well for having inadequate facilitiesand erratic coaching. It's almost scary to think what they coulddo with better opportunity.
Anjuli Bradshaw dominated her age group, with lovely style aswell.
All the participants, teachers and the staff at the Lions Poolare to be commended for a good event.
