Appeal to HelpAfghan Children
A local group is working with the Christiancommunity of the Cayman Islands to raise funds for basic needsfor the children of Afghanistan.
"Our hope is for all churches in theCayman Islands to join forces and then send a combined donationto aid the children of Afghanistan," said Ms Reddyhough amember of the Christian Service Commission that is part of theSt. Ignatius Catholic Church in Grand Cayman.
In a release she stated that Afghanistan'sharsh environment and relentless culture of war left hundredsof thousands of children without adequate food even before thefirst American bomb fell in retaliation for the September 11 attacks.Several weeks of war, however, have made a bad situation worse. The refugee crisis in Afghanistan has reached staggering proportionsand many lives now depend entirely on aid from other nations. As in any hunger crisis, children are the most vulnerable andcan suffer the effects for the rest of their lives. For example, malnutrition can permanently harm a developing brain, foreverdiminishing a child's potential.
"We are a small country but hopefullywe can show that we care. We are a multi-cultural and multi-racialsociety but we should all be able to come together for somethinglike this. Kids here know that they are privileged and that theycan help other children in need no matter how far away. Even ifthey can only give a dollar, it will mean something. This is achance to act on what we see and hear on the news," Ms Reddyhoughsaid.
