Hair Factsor Fiction: Surprise

Gary Callan

Every couple of months Ireceive a bunch of questions from clients. I've sorted the mostpopular ones into a fact or fiction list.

Hair grows faster if youhave regular trims.

Fiction! Whatever you doto the ends of your hair will not affect the rate at which theroots grow. Regular trims will keep the ends healthy, and yourhair will grow more evenly.

If you pull out a gray hairtwo will replace it.

Fiction! As I explainedin a past column, gray hair is simply the absence of colour. Sopulling out a gray hair will not influence another gray one togrow out.

You can use a temporarycolour to lighten your hair.

Fiction! Anything that lightensyour hair cannot be temporary.

If I shave my head my hairwill grow through a different texture.

Fiction. If you shave yourhead you will remove all of the damaged hair and your hair willgrow back in a virgin state. (Pity you cannot achieve this inother areas.)

I should not colour my hairwhile I'm pregnant.

Fiction! This is an "OldWives' Tale". I think people used to believe that if youcolour your hair you may affect the colour of the baby's hair.

Nonsense. Scientifically, you may pollute the blood supply to the baby if you have an openwound on your scalp. Otherwise, the colour cannot penetrate yourskin.

If I relax my hair, I willhave to let it grow out if I want my hair curly again.

Fact! A relaxer is the permanentremoval of curl from the hair. Of course, it depends on the amountof curl you straighten but nothing can remove the effects of arelaxer.

These are questions we getall the time. There are a lot more ridiculous ones but I willsave them for my book.

Until next week
Gary
