Cable &Wireless Donates to Cancer Awareness

The Cayman Islands Cancer Society's 4thAnnual Cancer Awareness Week is getting a helping hand from long-timesponsor Cable & Wireless.

The local telecommunications company hasdonated CI$15,000 towards the next Cancer Awareness Week, beingorganized by the Cayman Islands Cancer Society to take place from27 January through 2 February.

Cable & Wireless Corporate CommunicationsManager, Andrea Fa'amoe said: "Cable & Wireless has sponsoredCancer Awareness Week in an effort to empower victims of cancer,survivors, caregivers, and their families. The week provides education,which is one of the most important tools for those living withthe disease, plus it gives hope and comfort in the knowledge thatthey are not alone. Cancer is a disease that taxes all the resourcesand faith of the individual and their family. We hope that theCayman community will support a worthy cause that Cable &Wireless is proud to sponsor."

For the past 4 years, Cable & Wirelesshas teamed with the Cancer Society to assist Cancer AwarenessWeek and help raise awareness in the Cayman Islands.

During the annual week-long series of events,the Cancer Society raises funds for their education programmesand provides opportunities for the people in Cayman to learn moreabout cancer and ways of early detection and prevention.

The 4th Annual Cancer Awareness Week beginsSunday, 27 January, with a Half Marathon Walk starting at ThePublic Beach.

The Candlelight Vigil will be held Wednesdayat Smith Cove. Candles will be lit in remembrance, followed byprayer and songs. Friday 1 February, is the date of a Gala FundraisingDinner. This year it will be held in the new Westin Ballroom withLatin entertainment.

The week ends with the Cancer AwarenessSymposium on Saturday. The largest cancer educational event onGrand Cayman, the Cancer Awareness Symposium wraps up Cancer AwarenessWeek by arming attendees with information and skills includingstrategies for self-empowerment and communicating with healthcare providers and loved ones. The symposium is an all day eventrunning from 9-5 p.m. and is free to the public.

The symposium includes talks by specialists,book authors and cancer survivors on many topics including, women& men's cancers, nutrition, colon cancer, skin cancer, clinicaltrials, tobacco & cancer and the emotional side of cancer.Several booths are also on display with well-informed representativesgiving away free literature detailing the different types of cancers.

The Cable & Wireless donation will fundan information and assessment booth at the Cancer Awareness Symposium.Doctors specializing in various cancers and representatives ofthe CI Cancer Society will conduct risk assessments at the booth,and will give free cancer screening vouchers provided by Cable& Wireless to persons at risk.

CI Cancer Society Office manager Rupal Hagermansaid: "The Cable & Wireless Assessment and Consultationbooth will allow the community to come and find out if they areat risk for Cancer by filling out a questionnaire. We will havea Genetic Counselor from Baptist Hospital who will look throughthe genetic screening questionnaires. This will be a great opportunityto find out if you are at risk as early detection is the bestway to control further enlarging or spreading of the cancer area.C&W will also have free vouchers available for Mammograms,and testing for Prostate, Colon, Cervical, Lung, Ovarian, andSkin Cancer."
