Minister says cost will determine British Olympic bid

Richard Caborn

LONDON (AFP) - Britain's sports minister Richard Caborn said Sunday that cost would determine whether there was a London bid for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Caborn rejected press reports that the British Government had already ruled out a bid and told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I have to make the case for sport and there is a very strong case for sport.

"All the kids we are investing in through sport could well be the medallists of 2012.

"I shall put forward a very strong case for sport, but it will not be judged just on sport, it is about the cost of this project and the real value.

"What we are now going through is an appraisal of going into a bidding process and we shall do that up until the end of January when the cabinet will meet to make a final decision.

Boycott Zimbabwe, says Gower

LONDON, (AFP) - Former England captain David Gower has said that England and Australia should refuse to play their World Cup fixtures in Zimbabwe next year.

The International Cricket Council has ruled that the matches scheduled to take place in Harare and Bulawayo should go ahead despite the current political and economic unrest in the country.

Gower said that while he agreed that the safety angle was not an issue, he said that England and Australia should take a moral stand against Robert Mugabe's government.

Gower is opposed to Mugabe's policy of evicting white farmers from their land, both from the humanitarian standpoint and because he feels it will ultimately have an adverse affect on the country's wildlife population.
