The pedestrian walkway that will connect the beach side of the Ritz-Carlton property to the land side was erected on Thursday 19 December over West Bay Road.
Crews working with the Royal Cayman Islands Police shut down traffic temporarily at 11p.m. and reopened it the following morning at 6a.m.
Labourers worked through the night to minimise any adverse effect the work might cause on traffic through the area.
Prior to completion of the Ritz-Carlton property development, the bridge will serve as a walkway for workers to get from beach to lagoon side without interrupting traffic.
Once finished, it will serve as the main pedestrian ramp allowing hotel guests and staff access to both sides of the property without every having to walk outside.
Guests will be able to enter the Ritz-Carlton lobby from the land side of the property and walk to their room or residence on the beach side via the air-conditioned bridge.
The bridge will also serve as a connection point for all the major utilities operating the property. The state-of-the-art design will reflect the British colonial architecture of the property.
The bridge construction project is expected to last two months, with a completion date scheduled in late February.
"We have been working very hard to keep everything on schedule," said Mr.Richard Shirley, project manager for Fluor Corporation.
"This is a major step in our construction plans as it will facilitate our ability to better access the property, and minimize traffic disruption on West Bay Road. Also, we can begin to bring the two sides of the property together as one unit."
The Ritz-Carlton hotel/condominium project has met several key development targets to date, of which the pedestrian bridge is one.
"We are very pleased with the pace and progress of this project," said Mr. Michael Ryan, developer of The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.
"We want to thank the people on the island for their patience during this period of construction. The Ritz-Carlton is clearly shaping up to be all we planned for and more."
