International presence important for the Cayman Islands

Hon. Mckeeva Bush, H.E. Governor Bruce Dinwiddy

Leader of Government Business the Hon. Mckeeva Bush says it is important for the Cayman Islands to have a presence at international forums.

In his Christmas message, he said Cayman's presence is necessary so as to contribute to- and when necessary protest - proposals which impact our Caymanian interests. "We cannot afford to merely allow others to make decisions in our absence; some of which have already been initiated and have the potential to affect us for many Christmas times to come," Mr. Bush said in his Christmas message.

"Increasingly there are initiatives in the international arena that have an impact on the Cayman Islands. Without our presence, our voices just would not be heard."

Mr. Bush said that in spite of the challenges, 2002 has been another year for which the Cayman Islands has much to be thankful.

"When we look around this hemisphere and witness the poverty, social atrocities, and countries on the verge of war, we can better appreciate the blessings our country continues to enjoy," he added.

In his Christmas message, Governor Bruce Dinwiddy said that if the Cayman Islands can preserve its sense of family unity, love and community spirit, it shall move into the next 500 years of its history with confidence.

"This is more than ever important this year as we near the end of 2002 and stand on the threshold of our Quincentennial. This Christmas we can look back on the past 500 years, reviewing our heritage and considering how far Cayman has come since Christopher Columbus first discovered our Islands in May 1503. We should also look forward and ask ourselves how we can build on our past to make Cayman an even better place for the generations to come," he said.
