Butterfield funds children'sart

The Bank of Butterfield on Tuesday, 16thJanuary, presented a token cheque in the sum of CI$28,000 to itsPartnership for the Arts partner, the Cayman National CulturalFoundation (CNCF).

The money is to be used to fund a three-week Children's Art Residencyproject which officially gets underway on February 3 to culminatein a 'workshow' at the Harquail Theatre, where the monetary presentationwas held, from April 12 - 19.
The 'workshow' is to be featured also at this year's Cayfest.

The idea, according to a CNCF release, is "to bring togetherthe finest young potential in visual arts disciplines (drawing,painting, and ceramics) in the Cayman Islands school system..."

Twenty-two schools have each been invited to submit the worksof five of their best students, from which number approximately60 students will be selected to participate in the residency programme.Judging will be over three days beginning Tuesday, January 23.

The finalists, according to the release, will join one of threegroups, each assembling for four learning-intensive days, duringwhich the tutors, whose expertise cover a variety of media - fromcharcoal to clay - will stimulate responses and guide their efforts.

The works of 13 of the best of the lot will be featured in thebank of Butterfield's 2002 calendar, CNFC sources say.

Not only is the Bank of Butterfield shouldering the expenses ofthe workshop but also of the prizes being awarded for outstandingwork.

The first prize is an all-expenses paid trip for two to New York,tickets to visit the New York Museum of Modern Art and an engravedWaterford crystal.
The second prize comprises an engraved Waterford crystal and CI$200cash.
