World-renowned artist to paintmural

Phi Yeh
With the help of anyone interested, internationally-knownartist, Mr. Phil Yeh, will be painting a mural entitled, 'Buildinga World of Readers, Artists and Dreamers', at the National Gallery'sevent -
art@governorshouse_2001.come - on the grounds of Government Houseon Saturday, 27 January from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.
HE the Governor, Mr. Peter Smith and his wife, Mrs. Suzanne Smith,will be among the first to pick up paintbrushes and contributetheir skills to the mural, which will eventually have a permanenthome with the Public Libraries.
Mr. Yeh travels around the world painting murals to promote literacyand creativity. He founded the organisation, 'Artists Across Americaand the World' in 1985, and although he has travelled to all cornersof the globe, this will be his first trip to the Caribbean region.Cartoonists and other artists join Mr. Yeh everywhere he goesto paint these fun murals with a message.
Wherever he goes around the world Mr. Yeh speaks about the importanceof literacy and the arts. Says he: "Children are becomingmore isolated socially because of over-exposure to TV and videogames."
He cites research done at Harvard University in the United Statesas showing that children who take at least four years of art ormusic before going off to college, score higher on reading portionsof achievement tests and higher on math portions of college entranceexams.
Mr. Yeh asks people wherever he goes, even the adults: "Canyou live one day a week without electronic entertainment?"He says a lot of children don't think they can survive. He urgespeople to turn off their computers, TVs and video games for justone day a week, and to fill the void with reading or creatingart.
Mr. Yeh has spoken to thousands of students, teachers, parentsand organisations around the world about the importance of literacyand the arts.
He has produced more than 60 books, CD-roms, short animated films,videos, clothing and other products promoting his literacy andthe arts message.

Mr. Yeh will be travelling to Cayman Brac to paint a mural withthe help of students at Cayman Brac High School on Monday, 29January. All are welcome to come by and join in and talk withhim.
