The Cayman National Cultural Foundation(CNCF) and the Bank of Butterfield launch the second annual Partnershipfor the Arts Friday, 18 January.
Some 25 schools in the Islands have beeninvited to take part in this year's programme, which will teachyoung people to construct festival costumes. On Friday, CNCF willunveil 15 designs for the Batabano Children's Carnival in April.School representatives will then select outfits for children toproduce and model in the Batabano parade.
Artistic Director Henry Muttoo producedthe designs, based on pieces produced by young artists duringthe 2001 Partnership for the Arts. In addition to encouragingstudents' participation in carnival, Mr Muttoo believes the newproject will change their approach to art.
"They will be part of a process thattransforms art from a static object that hangs on a wall to movingsculpture. This is an eye-opening experience for anyone,"he adds.
Also describing the project, CNCF SpecialProjects Manager Sonia Bodden says: "Our goal was to takeart into the streets. We want to show the whole community howexciting and dynamic our children's creative work can be."
Once schools have selected their costumes, the CNCF will hold a two-day workshop to introduce educators tothe art of costume building and costume making. Teachers willreturn to schools and work with students to produce the designsin time for the Batabano parade on 13 April.
Last year CNCF and Bank of Butterfield begantheir partnership with a two-week art residency workshop for 60students of all ages, followed by an exhibition of more than 300works. The bank's sponsorship permits the foundation to stagethe workshop at no cost to participating schools.
