LighthouseStudents Learn Design Technology

Lighthouse Schoolteacher Liz Smith-Thompson and Church of the Latter Day Saintsvolunteer Elder Steven Davis assist two students.
The Lighthouse School recently held itsfirst ever design technology class.
This new programme encourages students toconsider jobs in construction after graduating from school forchildren with special needs.
For the introductory session children eagerlyfollowed the instructions on a box of Leggo blocks to constructa wide range of automobiles and vehicles. Teacher Mrs Liz Smith-Thompsonexplained that the idea was to familiarise children with the principlesof design and production before moving on to more complex areas.
Elder Davis Sargeant and another volunteer,Stephen Whittaker, will work with the design technology classon Friday mornings.
Each week three or four of the school'sseven classes will attend design technology. As a result studentsof all ability levels will gain exposure to the subject everytwo weeks. While the school is still working to develop a curriculumfor the subject, it hopes that, with public and private sectorparticipation, it will soon have such a programme in place.
Mrs Smith-Thompson said this partnershipbetween school and community allows teachers to focus more onindividual children's needs. She added that any other interestedpersons, particularly those in the construction industry, areencouraged to take part in the new programme.
