How Much Hairloss is Normal?

Gary Callan

This question comes froma female, so I will not bother explaining Male Pattern Baldness(besides, it is a bit of a sore point).

A healthy woman can looseup to one hundred hairs per day. That's right, one hundred. Thismay seem like a lot, but when you consider that the average personhas over a quarter of a million hairs on their head, it's nottoo bad, and every time you lose one, it's replaced with a newone.

Some people complain ofexcessive hair loss every time they shampoo. This can simply bethe hair that has fallen out but has not left the rest of yourhair. This is quite common among curly haired people. If you combor brush your hair often throughout the day you will not noticethe loss. If you comb your hair once a week then look out! Yourcomb could look like a small Mexican dog.

Many people find their hairsheds seasonally. They may loose more during the hotter months. It's important to keep a check on this. Drastic hair loss is usuallya sign of a more serious underlying health problem.

Often clients confuse hairloss with hair breakage. The hair shaft can break very near theroot and this will give the appearance of your hair falling out. It's easy to check. Simply run your fingers over the affectedarea and if it's breakage you will feel a bristly texture. Ifit's hair loss your scalp will be smooth.

A major difference betweenhair loss and hair breakage is the actual cause. Hair loss occursas a result of an internal problem, be it poor circulation orpoisonings (Radiation treatment for example). Hair breakage resultsfrom the mistreatment of the hair, such as chemical over-processing,or heat damage from a too hot blow dryer. These are not, of coursethe only things which can cause these conditions, I am simplylisting a couple of probable culprits.

Technically speaking allforms of hair loss are known as alopecia. There are various degreesof this and they each have a Latin name (that I can't spell). It can range from the dramatic (comical) losing all the colouredhair in your head, known as turning gray over night to the totalloss of all body hair, eyebrows and all.

In my experience when aclient has suffered a measurable amount of hair loss, it is usuallyassociated with stress. So keep stress-free.

Until next week
Gary
