The Burns Conolly Group, Ltd. has announcedthat it was recently engaged by the Ugland Group to facilitatecontinued development of the Half Moon Bay Harbour and MarinaComplex feasibility study.
The company said that study shall be providedfree of cost to the Government.
The Harbour and Marina project, which originatedas a single-use aggregate pier, is currently undergoing additionaltechnical and economic feasibility studies to confirm whetherit can incorporate the general and containerized cargo for theIslands.
It is expected that the Port Authority wouldoperate the expanded facility.
"Phase 1 does not include the relocationof any petroleum supplies to the eastern facility," Mr. Conollysaid "The project will look at incorporating these facilitiesat a later stage." Mr. Conolly went on to say, "Futurephases of this project will likely also assist in the criticaldiversification of the Caymanian economy."
The scope of project undergoing study incorporatesthe general and containerized cargo for the island, the pipeddischarge of cement and aggregate along with associated storagefacilities. Phase 1 also includes a marina, public open spaceand boat launching facilities along with roadside landscaping.
The Burns Conolly Group said the site wasoriginally selected due to its proximity to deep water therebylimiting dredging, few initial environmental issues, sparse existingdevelopment in the area and the availability of land for futuredevelopment.
"We are currently in the process ofmeeting with the direct users of the Port and gathering the datato complete the expanded feasibility study, which will be finalizedwithin a few months. A project this important to the Islands,which will help facilitate the future development of the cruisefacilities in George Town, must be carefully thought out to maximizeits positive impact on the Cayman Islands, " Mr Conolly said
Leader of Government Business, The Hon.McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP said in the Legislative Assembly in lateDecember that Government had reached a decision to support thedevelopment of the Harbour and marina complex in the eastern districtsto handle the offloading of cargo and supplies. Mr. Conolly commented,"The Government has had great long term vision in supportingthe project and has recognized the importance of exclusively dedicatingthe downtown site to cruise ship passengers, an urgent need dueto rapidly increasing regional competition. This project ultimatelyhas the capability to be one of the greatest economic driversthe Cayman Islands has seen."
The Burns Conolly Group, Ltd. will teamup with the USA based Han-Padron Associates, who are world leadersin the design and engineering of marine, port and harbour structures.Misener Marine, based in Tampa and The Ugland Group in Caymanalong with several other local entities will also be consultingon the proposal prior to its next presentation to Government andthe public.
