Exercise, NutritionCan Help Control Diabetes

Persons with diabetes, as well those whowant to learn more about it, are encouraged to start off the newyear by learning how to manage the condition ­ and in theprocess, feel more energetic and in control.

At the next Cayman Islands Diabetes Association(CIDA) meeting, set for 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, 6 February at theGeorge Town Town Hall, health practitioners will explain how exerciseand nutrition play vital roles in diabetes management. First,Family Nurse Practitioner Abigail Parchment will outline the benefitsof exercise, including how it can control blood sugars and reducediabetes complications.

Nurse Parchment, who recently returned froma Caribbean Diabetes Education course in Barbados, will also talkabout precautions that persons with diabetes should take whileexercising and provide pamphlets for participants to take home.Community Nutritionist Simone Sheehan will then present the meeting'ssecond topic about healthy eating habits.

As always, participants will have opportunitiesto have their questions answered by the health practitioners,and enjoy refreshments provided by the Pink Ladies. If time permits,CIDA organisers will offer a 10-minute exercise session.

Ms Sheehan noted that anyone may becomea CIDA member, adding that the new year presents a prime opportunityto start health-smart habits. "For individuals who may nothave participated last year, this is a great time to join. Forthose who came occasionally, it's a great time to think aboutattending regularly," she said. "The meetings are gearedtoward sharing practical, medically proven ways of managing diabetesthat are easy to incorporate into daily routines.
