New StreetAtlas goes to Archive First

Director ofLands and Survey Clark Buchanan, Senior Executive Cartographerfor Lands and Survey John Bebb, and Director of the National ArchivePhilip Pedley look on as His Excellency the Governor, Mr. PeterJ. Smith, CBE, signs the first of 100 special collectors' copiesof the atlas.

A piece of history will be conserved foreveras His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Peter J. Smith, CBE, presenteda signed copy of the Cayman Islands' first comprehensive StreetAtlas to Dr. Philip Pedley, Director of the Cayman Islands NationalArchive, on 25 January.

One hundred collectors' copies of the Landsand Survey Department's Official Street Atlas of the Cayman Islands,signed by Mr. Smith and stamped with his official seal, will befor sale initially at the official launch party on Wednesday,30 January, at a cost of CI $100.00 each.

"I'm delighted to receive this on behalfof the Nation Archive," said Dr. Pedley. "This copywill be the absolute preservation copy, while another will beavailable in our reading room for researchers."

He noted land has always been an issue thatCaymanians are keenly interested in, with marking and ownershipof land going back some 200 years and the first official landregistration occurring in 1850. The atlas, Dr. Pedley said, isthe logical and necessary product of the process that startedat that time.

Director of Lands and Survey Clark Buchananexplained that a special advance shipment of the atlases was broughtin for the Governor's signing, as well as to get them in the handsof all emergency response staff as quickly as possible. The remainingbooks were expected to arrive by sea on Monday, 28 January, andought to be available in stores throughout the three islands bythe following week, he said.

Copies of this 170-page, full-colour volumewill cost CI$29.95 and can also be purchased from the Lands andSurvey Department in the Tower Building and the Cayman Brac LandsOffice in the District Administration Building.
