Cuban refugees off Cayman Brac

A boat full of Cuban refugees was spotted near the shore of Cayman Brac on Monday.

Police officers on patrol saw the vessel off the west end of the island at around 6:20 a.m.

As the officers did not recognise the vessel, they observed it and watched it approach the Brac Reef Dock.

Upon coming closer they realised that it was a Cuban refugee boat which was confirmed when the boat docked.

The vessel, which was approximately 20 feet long, had 11 occupants on board, all of whom were adults, 10 males and one female.

Although the boat docked, the occupants remained onboard.

Police, Customs and Immigration were all in attendance and a spokesperson for the Cubans indicated that their intended destination was Honduras.

Supplies of food, water and fuel were offered and the vessel left Cayman Brac around 4:35pm that afternoon.
