Jennifer Newton's photography on show at Grand Old House
The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands opens its second exhibition of 2003 with a show and sale of Jennifer Newton's black and white photography at Grand Old House on Wednesday, 8 January, at 6:30pm.
Reluctant to talk about her work, Ms. Newton says she feels more comfortable expressing herself visually. Her photographs, which often appear simple, pay attention to detail. "I would rather focus on a doorknob than an entire house," she states.
At age five, Ms. Newton was introduced to photography by her father, a self-taught amateur who built a darkroom and interested his daughter in his life's passion.
She moved with her family to her mother's home in Grand Cayman when she was 12 years old.
After graduating from Triple C, she worked as a photographer for the Norwester magazine and the Sun newspaper, but she then turned to other thingsone being autocross racing!
Five years ago, Ms. Newton had an urge to get back into photography. She saw an ad for darkroom equipment and set up a photography lab, Spotted Dog, in West Bay by the four-way stop.
She also started teaching black and white photography to supplement her income.
Although she teaches her students all of the technical aspects of black and white photography, Ms. Newton tries to make the "how to" part as simple as possible, believing that the best way to learn photography is by doing.
National Gallery Director Leslie Bigelman appreciates the artistic quality of Ms. Newton's photos and says:
"Form, light, shadow and composition are all strong points of Jennifer's work. Her keen eye, coupled with her experimentation with different film types and developing techniques, have produced an expressive and impressive body of art work."
All are welcome to attend the opening on Wednesday, 8 January with an RSVP to the National Gallery at 945-8111. The exhibit will run through February 27th.
