Darts team back from Barbados
The Cayman National Darts team participatedin the 13th Caribbean championship in Barbados recently, and showeda marked improvement over previous championships mainly thanksto the workhorse efforts of Frank Coleman. Of the 49 points accumulatedby Cayman, Coleman had a hand in 27 of them. He played in 11 singlesmatches and was victorious in 8. Of 11 Mixed Doubles he and hispartner won 6 (4 with Kim McEachern and 2 with Michelle Terry).
In Men's Doubles he played 11 matches winning 7 with Hank Ebanksand 1 with Neville Parker. In Mixed Triples he participated in11 matches winning 3 with Hank Ebanks & Kathy Schirmacherand 2 with Ebanks & Irma gonez. An outstanding effort.
In Singles play Neville Parker cllected 2 wins and eddie Ballantine,Hiram Wright, Mark O'Keeffe and Hank Ebanks each collected 1 win.In the Ladies Section Carol Johnson picked up 4 wins and MichelleTerry 2 wins. Other winners in Men's Doubles were Eddie Ballantine& Mark O'Keefe (3 wins): Neville Parker & Hiram Wright(3 wins).
Mixed doubles pairing John Nixon & Kathy Schirmacher won 1match and gonez & Carol Johnson took 2 victories and Carolteamed up with Michelle erry for another point.
Overall the team improved to 9th place with the following results;Cayman 3 - St. Lucia 9; Cayman 7 - guyana 5; Cayman 3 - Florida9; Cayman 2 - jamaica 10; Cayman 1 - Trinidad & Tobago 11;Cayman 6 - Brasil 6; Cayman 8 - B.V.I. 4; Cayman 5 - Barbados7; Cayman 2 - Bahamas 10; Cayman 7 - turks & Caicos 5; cayman5 - Bermuda 7.
Bahamas were overall champions and were the class of the competitionas they were undefeated with 10 wins and one draw.
At the Caribbean Darts Organization A.G.M. held at the close ofcompetition, the cayman Islands were awarded host venue for the2002 championships. Cayman previously hosted the chamionshipsin 1990 and this event is still regarded as one of the most successfuland enjoyable tournaments in the history of Caribbean darts.
In addition, Cayman will play host to the inaugural americas'cup which will include not only the existing 12 competing Caribbeannations but will also be joined by teams from the USA, Canadaand hopefully other Central and South American countries.
The 3 day event which will immediately follow the Caribbean championshipsis sanctioned by the World Darts Organization and will receivemuch publicity and promotion in coming months and years. It isalso anticipated that the finals will be televised throughoutNorth, Central and South America.
