Baroness Amos was appointed a GovernmentWhip in the House of Lords in July 1998. In addition to her roleas a Spokesperson on International Development, she also speakson Social Security and Women's Issues. She was created a lifepeer in August 1997.
Valerie Amos was born in Guyana, studiedat the Universities of Warwick, Birmingham and East Anglia, andwas awarded an Honorary Professorship at Thames Valley Universityin 1995 in recognition of her work on equality and social justice.
After working in Equal Opportunities, Trainingand Management Services in local government in the London boroughsof Lambeth, Camden and Hackney, she became Chief Executive ofthe Equal Opportunities Commission 1989-94. In 1995 Valerie Amosco-founded Amos Fraser Bernard and was an adviser to the SouthAfrican Government on public service reform, human rights andemployment equity.
In the House of Lords, Baroness Amos wasa co-opted member of the Select Committee on European CommunitiesSub-Committee F (Social Affairs, Education and Home Affairs) 1997-98.
Valerie Amos has also been Deputy Chairof the Runnymede Trust 1990-98, a Trustee of the Institute ofPublic Policy Research, a non-executive Director of the UniversityCollege London Hospitals Trust, a Trustee of Voluntary ServicesOverseas, Chair of the Afiya Trust, a director of Hampstead Theatreand Chair of the Board of Governors of the Royal College of NursingInstitute.
