Needed A Monthly Stateof the Island Statement
Dear Sir:
In my last letter I addressed the past Governmentand now I would like to turn that focus to the current one. Thisis in the form of a gentle reminder (at this time!) on some ofthe burning and pressing issues that need to be resolved. I knowthat there are a lot of initiatives underway, but I believe governmentis obligated to convey this to the public at every opportunity. In fact, it would be wise for the current Leader of GovernmentBusiness to do this in the form of a "State of the Islandaddress" at least monthly (Accountability).
Now that some of the dust has settled onthe overseas initiatives, the more pressing issues for the timebeing are Education reform, Immigration reform, CAL, the HealthServices, our troubled youth, and of course the Constitutionalreview. This is a heavy load under the best of circumstances, but the public should be informed as to what is being done ineach case (Transparency). These are the same issues that led toa change of government, and if they are not dealt with in a clearand expeditious manner, they will no doubt lead to another!
These responsibilities should not be shunnedfor fear of re-election, for if they are, that will be the endresult anyway. I hope we have now have a Government that willface the issues while exercising fiscal restraint and good commonsense, looking at the whole picture and not dealing with each on itsown. Everything is inter-related in this small country, and forus to get it right we have to address it in this manner.
We are looking and listening. Good Luckfor all our sake.
Yours for a better Cayman,
Osbourne Bodden
