George Town Sports Club's midfielder GarthAnderson was named Footballer of the Year at the Cayman IslandsFootball Association's (CIFA) awards presentation last Saturdaynight. Susan Eden, of Scholars International, took the title forwomen footballers.
Over 30 awards and commendations were madeto football players in the junior, men's and women's divisionand to supporters, at the function held at Pedro Castle, whichwas attended by over 250 persons, representing clubs, teams, fansand family.
Bodden Town's Robert Webster, who scoreda goal in every game, was named FA Cup MVP. Scholars International'sAlfredo Whittaker took the goalkeeper of the year title and AntoinetteThompson of George Town copped the award for the women's league.
George Town's Anthony Fogarty's 21 goalsof the season earned him the goal scorer of the year award andSusan Eden and George Town's Natalie Richards shared the trophyfor most goals in the women's league. Defender of the year wasawarded to Frederick Wilks (George Town) and Vicky Hew (Naya Sporting)for the women.
CIFA also presented five Orders of Meritto persons who were noted for their contribution to the developmentof football in the Cayman Islands. The five were: Clifton Hunter(posthumous award); Clarence Flowers; Michael Simmons; Ed Wilson,and Alfonso Dixon. Each was read a citation, recalling some oftheir contributions.
CIFA President, Mr. Jeffrey Webb said, longbefore his time, the five honorees had "laid the foundationfor the popularity and pride of place that football enjoys today,and as President, I am grateful and at the same time humbled tocarry on their legacy."
He added that in time to come, there wouldbe others who will be honored in the same way for their contribution.
Mr. Leonard Ebanks, President of BritishAmerican Bank, recalled the late Mr. Clifton Hunter's role asan educator, attorney-at-law and Member of the Legislative Assembly.He was cited as instrumental in the development of the Annex fieldand football in West Bay, resulting in a historically intenserivalry in football between George Town and that district. Theaward was presented to his son, Mr. Arthur Hunter.
The citation to Clarence Flowers spoke ofhis role in sponsoring the Blocks team in the early 1970s, encouragingyoungsters to play football and later continuing support throughhis company, C.L. Flowers and Sons.
Floyd Bodden read the citation to Mike Simmons,and spoke of his role as sponsor of the Links football team inthe late 1960s and in developing football fields at the Annexin George Town; Cayman Islands High School and West Bay Primary.
Former national player Neil Murray, whoread the citation to Ed Wilson, pointed to his contribution asa coach, player and former member of CIFA Executive, noting:"asa teacher and football coach, he has touched many lives."
CIFA President, Jeffrey Webb commended Mr.Dixon for being "perhaps the only volunteer in football andin society who has been as consistent and generous with theirtime." Mr. Godfrey Bowen presented his citation.
Guest speaker at the ceremony was Capt.Horace Burrell, President of the Jamaica Football Federation,who told the gathering that CIFA and its president, Mr. Webb werehighly regarded by FIFA and in the Caribbean for their work asadministrators of football in the Cayman Islands. He called forfurther public and government support for the game.
Also receiving a special award for its rolein helping CIFA maintain its "credibility and viability"was the association's honorary auditors for 10 years, PriceWaterhouseCoopers.Others receiving recognition were Ronnie Roach, for contributionsto youth football; Everton Bryan; Cherry Ann Whittaker for supportof women's football, and Floyd Bush for contributions to youthand community service.
