Mr. David Thursfield, Commissionerof Police, explained that the RCIP introduced the DARE programmeto the Cayman Islands three years ago in accordance with the NationalStrategic Plan for drug abuse prevention, which is coordinatedby the National Drug Council (NDC). "The DARE programme teachesyoung people how to say no to drugs and helps them to developpositive life skills. The five-year commitment from CUC is extremelybeneficial because it will help to ensure the exposure of theprogramme in the years ahead.

The programme, which isvery popular with schools, and children alike, enables young peopleto interact with police officers in a non-challenging manner.I feel in my heart that it is exciting and stimulating and theRCIP and the NDC are developing methods to monitor the effectof the programme on our young people," said Mr. Thursfield.

Coordinator of the DAREprogramme in the Cayman Islands, Sgt. Frank Brennan of the RCIP'sCommunity Relations Department also expressed his appreciationto CUC on behalf of the DARE officers and the RCIP. "I wouldlike to thank CUC for their valuable contribution to this programme.Without the assistance of sponsors the DARE programme would notbe the success as it is today.

Although CUC has assistedthe RCIP with many charitable events over the years, I believethis is an opportunity to forge a long-term relationship betweenthe two entities which will not only benefit the children of Caymanfor many years to come, but for all people, from all walks oflife, who care about the fight against drugs," remarked Sgt.Frank Brennan.

Presenting the donationon behalf of CUC was Mr. Richard Hew, Senior Vice President andGeneral Manager who commented that, "We are pleased to havethe opportunity to become affiliated with the DARE programme becauseit enables CUC to make a long-term investment in our youth. Thekey to prevention is education and CUC commends the RCIP for takingthe initiative to establish this educational programme, whichteaches our young people how to live a life free of drugs andviolence. We are also confident that this partnership with theRCIP will complement the efforts of parents, teachers and othercommunity groups who are committed to our youth."
