The Employment ServicesCentre Summer Employment Programme for high school and collegestudents is in high gear, with 164 students placed.

Thirty one students arefrom Cayman's high schools. This is the first time there has beena formal summer job programme in place catering to the 16-17 agegroup.

The Summer Intern Programmewas formerly run through the Education Department, which stilldeals with placing students in the schools and in the summer schoolprogramme.

However, this year the Departmentof Employment Relations and the Department of Youth teamed upto try and place a record number of students.

Mrs Beverly Chinn-Sin ofJohn Gray High School was the initial contact point for the highschool students.
Mr Walling Whittaker of the Employment Relations Department praisedemployers who responded willingly to summer placement for students.

He said that in the presenteconomic climate, the Department wanted to expose students towhat work was really like, give them an opportunity to earn somemoney to supplement their school fees and other school expensesas well as to have some summer fun.

"This year we placedseveral dozen students in the hospitality industry," Mr Whittakersaid. "Students need to see that jobs are available in thatsector which can be interesting, and which pay well. It is importantthat tourists see Caymanians, and also for Caymanians to havethe opportunity to talk to tourists and interact with them, showingthem what our culture and our people are like."

Next year the EmploymentServices Centre hopes to run an even bigger programme. Registrationwill be available online in advance to make the match betweenstudent and job even better.

There are still some jobsavailable and students can call 945-3114, or register at the officeat 310 Paddington Place.
