Madamspeaker's'Kun'trovacee'

By Eden Hurslton
This week in Sound Scene,we begin a series of reviews focused on original local music. We're kicking it off with the funky rock 'n roll of Madamspeaker. With such a broad range of cultures and influences in modern Cayman, most new music from our isle will probably be something otherthan soca or reggae. The artist is always trying to push the envelope,to reach the horizon and expand upon what they see. This trioof local boys has certainly pushed the envelope on their debut,'Kun'trovercee.' With honest lyrics and raw, energized riffs,Madamspeaker brings you real rock music, crafted in Cayman witha universal sound.
"Our influences includeHendrix, The Police, Red Hot Chili Peppers and definitely LennyKravitz. We like honest music, music played from the heart, withconviction." Royce, bassist and co-founder of Madamspeakershared a few words with me about their music. "Nothing newis ever really created musically. Musicians are inspired by whatthey listen to; they personalize it and take it to the next level."
'Kun'trovercee' aboundswith some obvious influences. Singer/guitarist Jon Jackson's voicesounds so much like Lenny Kravitz its uncanny. The songs "ICan't" and "Shake It Up" have a decidedly Kravitzstyle to them as well. With hypnotic riffs, humming bass linesand rocksteady snare beats, "I Have Reason" is reminiscentof "Every Breath You Take." "Big Bottom Funk"and the socially conscious "Resolution" dip into theChili Peppers flavor with drummer Adrian Ebanks holding the foundationwith feverish flair. "Inside" shows a more chilled sideto the group with its entrancing Creed-like introduction and personallyrics.
Even though Madamspeaker'swell rounded music touches on many styles and influences, theirsound is truly their own brand of classic rock 'n roll. Askedwhat inspires the music, Royce says "We really see ourselvesas a medium for the music. I pick up my instrument and see whatcomes out; let creative sounds come through and communicate themusic to others. One of us will come up with some music, Jon willadd some words and we let it evolve." Their "let itevolve" approach worked well on 'Kun'trovercee.' All ninetracks were recorded in 35 session hours at Hi Tide's Garden Studioand the band was only formed in January!
The CD, which retails atan affordable $14.98, is well produced. The mix manages to beclear with a raw, vocals-up-front feel that keeps it real. Manyof the songs would be right at home on local radio; don't be surprisedto hear Madamspeaker heating up the airwaves soon. About the futureof the band, Royce declares "We believe in what we do sowe'll keep writing songs and start playing live in a couple ofweeks; maybe a show with you guys (Cloudburst). We'll bring itto the people. For now, check out the CD, and enjoy the experience."
