Playing their part to promote the upcomingQuincentennial celebrations, the Department of Vehicle and DriverLicensing has teamed up with the Quincentennial Celebrations officeto bring a little colour to vehicles on our roads. This week seesthe introduction of a new licence coupon holder featuring theQuincentennial Celebrations logo. The new coupon will be displayedin all vehicles which are licensed between now and the end of2003.Department of Vehicle and Driver Licensing, Philip Ebanksbelieved it was important for his department to get involved inwhatever way they could: "The DVDL is privileged to workwith the QCO to help publicize our upcoming 500 year anniversarycelebrations in 2003. Without doubt, this is the most importanthistorical celebration of this lifetime for the Caymanian people."

The new licence coupon holder is the firstof two planned collaborations. The second, to be released laterthis year, is a specially designed 500-year anniversary limitededition registration plate that will replace current licence platesuntil the end of 2003. Philip Ebanks points out that change onthis scale does not happen every day; "Obviously changeslike these would only be undertaken to mark an event of greatmagnitude, such as our Quincentennial. I am sure that the designswill stir a sense of national pride and express how importantthis milestone is to us as a people."

"The Quincentennial Celebrations programmehas many components. It is not just about providing a wide rangeof events throughout 2003 it is also about creating a sense ofpride in which we are. The new licence plates in particular willhelp to do that," explained National Quincentennial CommitteeChair, Ezzard Miller.

"The DVDL was one of the first unitswe approached in the early planning stages of the programme. Wewanted to find ways for them to join in and the coupon stickerand licence plates were obvious choices. I am very excited aboutseeing the first real "Caymanian" license plates whichshould be available in October this year," remarked QCO ExecutiveDirector Angela Martins.
