Grand Cayman Enrolment Trends
Education officials say government schoolregistration to date suggests that all places will be filled bythe start of the new school year.
At present the only remaining primary schoolswith spaces for students are North Side and East End. Meanwhilethe rate of enrolment at George Hicks High School indicates anincoming year seven group that will be larger than last year'stotal of 321.
Chief Education Officer Nyda Flatley saysthe pressure for space has reached the stage at which some requestsfrom Caymanian parents to transfer children from private schoolsmay not be accommodated at the school of their choice.
"The majority of transfer requestsare for Red Bay Primary School, which had an enrolment of 478students last year and is already at full capacity for September.I advise parents to retain students in private schools unlessthe education department confirms transfer arrangements,"Mrs Flatley adds.
At the start of the last school year 4,065students were registered in government schools, including some390 entering the government school system for the first time. Both numbers will likely increase in 2002.
