Nearly 3,000 competitorsfrom North America and the Caribbean recently came together toparticipate in the prestigious East Coast Invitational Age GroupTrack and Field Meet conducted at Duke University in North Carolina.
Among them were Cayman'sPhoenix Athletic Club jumpers Opal Bodden, Joanna Phillips, andPerry Anglin.
Each one of the Phoenixathletes competed in both the triple jump and the high jump intheir respective age categories.
Opal set personal bestsin both her events in the 13-14 year-old group. She placed secondin the triple jump, and in the process bettered the previous meetrecord on all six of her attempts, toping at 34' 10 1/2"against 15 opponents.
Bermuda's CARIFTA and CAC Junior representative Latroya Darrellshattered the old triple jump mark with a leap of 37' 3".She also soared 5' 5 3/4" for victory in the high jump.
Joanna, who is nearly twoyears younger than the older competitors in the 15-16 year olddivision, tied for second place in the high jump with a finalclearance of 4' 11 3/4". Her mark of 34' 8 3/4" placedher seventh in the triple jump.
Perry hopped-stepped-and-jumpedhis way to the silver medal in 13-14 group triple jump, boundingout to 37' 9 1/2". His effort of over 5' 3 3/4" in thehigh jump was good for fifth place.
Bredon Lyons II, who wasalso a member of the Cayman contingent, had a chance to squareoff against some of the outstanding talent in the 13-14 boys sprintevents.
Brendon clocked 12.70 over100 meters, placing 33rd of 45 starters, and 26.50 in the 200meters event, which was good for the 28th position of 40 entrants.
While in North Carolina,the group enjoyed a visit to the University of North Carolinatrack where Marion Jones performed during her college days. Theywere also treated to lunch at Michael Jordan's restaurant, The23, in Chapel Hill.
