Cayman Cricket Team CreatesHistory

A Cayman 6-a-sidecricket team returned to Cayman as runners-up in the Miami International6-a-side competition.

The Cayman team consisted of Ryan Bovell (captain), David Wight,Chris Wight, Frank Hinds, Teddy Gray, Philip Wight, and Gary Tulloch.
Cayman's greatest achievement was in beating the Barbados teamin the semi-final with one over to spear. The reason why thisvictory was so great was that, before the tournament started, the Barbados team were the huge favourites because their teamconsisted of West Indies players Roland Holder and Courtney Browne,as well as Barbados National team players Ian Bradshaw and EmersonJordan, and other first Division players.

The Cayman team created history by beating the tournament favouritesto set up a final against a Guyana team Atlantis, that boastedthe inclusion of hard hitting Clayton Lambert, also of West IndiesTest cricket fame.

The Guyana team had beaten Cayman in the early stages, but becauseof an injury Lambert was unable to play in the final, and thereforeCayman went into the final expecting a victory.

Guyana batted first and with the help of a guest player Thomas, who plays for the Windwards Red Stripe Bowl team, scored 114 intheir allotted 10 overs. Cayman felt this was within reach, butin the end fell short by only 6 runs when the overs were completed.

Guyana won the first place trophy, while Cayman, at the awardsceremony, were unanimously voted the best team, judged as suchbecause the organizers felt that the Cayman team, without anyTest stars, performed with the "most heart" and determinationin reaching the final.

Ryan David, Chris, Teddy, Frankie, Philip and Gary did Cayman'scricket proud.
