Cricket Champs to be declared
The CICA 1999-2000 cricket championshipwill be decided on Sunday 25 June, at the JP Oval in West Bay.
Cayman's defending double champions, By-Rite (sponsored by CaymanCustom Cabinet), and league leaders prison face off in the matchof the season, knowing that this match is like a knock-out cupfinal, as this years championship has boiled down to this finalmatch.
After the worst season in their history, losing two games, By-Ritehave come back strong in the second half of the season, winningall their games in convincing fashion. With the addition of threeall rounders to the squad, Ishwal Sookoonsigngh, Saheed Mohamed, and Anthony Dawes, added to the experience of the Wight brothers, and Teddy Gray, By-Rite have regained the confidence and teamspirit of past seasons.
Throughout the years of By-Rites domination of local cricket,it has been their depth in batting that has been the backboneto their success, and with the resurgence of form it is that depthonce again that will make them tough to beat.
Prison on the other hand, have had an excellent season, winningtheir early matches with little trouble, and looked well on theirway to winning the championship. It has been the bowling, howeverof the Prison team that has dominated the opposition, but withSteve Gordon, Larry Cunningham and Patrick Barrett amongst others,in their batting line up, Prisons batting is where their strengthlies.
In the upset match of the season, the Environmental All Starsbeat Prison in their last match, letting By-Rite back into thechampionship race.
Over the years, the rivalry between By-Rite and Prison has alwaysbeen intense and exciting, and a match that attracts a lot ofinterest and debate. However, it is not always the case that thechampionship boils down to the final match of the season, withthese two power-house teams meeting to decide it.
The Prison team knows that a win will give them the championshipoutright, but a By-Rite victory will mean sharing it.
With the added importance of this match to decide the 1st Divisionchampionship, what is normally an exciting game, has turned intoa match that no cricket fan in Cayman should miss. The qualityof players on both teams guarantee that this match will not onlybe one with the usual rivalry involved, but one of pure classnot to forget.
