There's no reason for Bashingof Caymanians

There is a wide spread perception that expatriateswho come to live among us - regardless of nationality, religiousor racial origin - are the recipients of a tremendous amount of'expatriate bashing'.

The truth is though - that it is the indigenous people of theCayman Islands who are consistently subjected to 'Caymanian bashing'- because the people of this land are not boisterous, aggressiveand are quite tolerant of others' ignorance of their natural preferenceto trust others and display of humbleness.

When others migrate to another country - as they have done forcenturies, it is only natural that those who accepted the traditionsof their hosts - who did far better than those who were hell benton trying to change a country's physiological make up. Time spent'gossiping' about what is wrong with the people and place theexpatriate has made home - must certainly go against all principlesto achieve success.

In partnership with expatriates - the people of the Cayman Islandswith a natural in-born amount of giftedness - have provided theplatform which has launched this country into world wide recognitionand respect. It is therefore understandable, that many who cometo visit these islands make every effort to get back here to reside, work and share in Cayman's unique lifestyle.

On the other hand it is regrettable, when it becomes obvious thatexpatriates privileged to be living here seem determined to impose- rather, force their philosophies on the people of the CaymanIslands.

The attraction to Cayman was there in the first place, for whateverreason. Therefore it behooves every expatriate who settles downto live in the Cayman Islands - to remember that it was the peopleof the Cayman Islands who provided the atmosphere ... the ambianceof a preferred lifestyle... void of profound prejudices.

There are many who have picked up garbage along Seven Mile Beach,to make Grand Cayman attractive and preserved for enjoyment byvisitors and residents alike. Capt. Eldon Kirkconnell was up quiteearly in the mornings back in the late 60's, around 6:30 am ...sweeping the front of his tiny building which housed his DutyFree store. He then went off to the airport in his pick-up truckto get a few items of the goods he brought in to sell to the fewtourists the islands received back then.

Mr. Clarence Flowers preceded the modern block making plant heand his family are now operating by casting blocks in wooden moldsand drying them in the sun. Mrs Gaylia Coe-Hall, the Past Presidentof the Chamber of Commerce worked rather long hours along withher parents to maintain their downtown Comart food store - a buildingwhich now house a division of Bank of Butterfield.

The publisher of Cayman Net News took the Cayman Islands to theworld through the Nor'wester magazine by producing an overrunof thousands of copies which were distributed by a wholesale subscriptionsbroker. The Northwester Group did not receive any payment forthis effort

We all pressed on, working very hard to make our country whatit is today,
producing the quality productswe do .... true-Caymanians and 'paper' Caymanians alike. It istherefore not without a sense of urgency we appeal to those whohave 'just come' - to work with us .... because we are, what weare ... unique in every sense.
