CITA trainsyoung Caymanian for career in tourism
The Cayman Islands TourismAssociation (CITA) is enjoying the company of an enthusiastictourism student this summer.
Regina Clarke, a 19-year-oldCaymanian, is getting an insight into all aspects of the tourismindustry, by assisting the CITA office during her 10-week internship.
Having already completeda 2 -year Associate's Degree of Arts in Social Studies at theCommunity College, Regina is presently enrolled in the Bachelorof Tourism Studies Degree Program at Brock University in Ontario,Canada. Majoring in Tourism Management, Regina is being sponsoredby the Cayman Islands Government Education Council.
According to Nicole La Valette,General Manager of the CITA, Regina will be exposed to many aspectsof the tourism industry during her internship with the CITA, whichhas over 210 members from all sectors of the tourism industry.
Mrs. La Valette stated "weare thrilled to have such an enthusiastic assistant over our busysummer months.
Regina has already rolledup her sleeves and is helping with various aspects of the eventcoordination for the Taste of Cayman, which is a great projectmanagement experience. We also have many marketing projects andmembership initiatives under way, which present an excellent opportunityfor Regina to experience the happenings in all sectors of thetourism industry first hand."
When asked why she choseto study tourism, Regina said "I decided to study tourismas a result of my growing interest in the economy of islands nowand in the future, which is significantly affected by one of ourmain industries. Enjoying interacting with people of diverse culturesand hoping to be a source of contribution to the economic successof my country and my home, I believe that a career in tourismwill present many opportunities for me to do so.
"I encourage otheryoung people to consider a career in the tourism or hospitalityfield and believe that many people would be interested in whathappens to be the 'Largest Industry in the World'. However, sufficientinformation about jobs and opportunities available in the tourismfield needs to be made available in all schools throughout theislands and everyone needs to be educated about the importanceof tourism."
Regina's internship is beingfunded through the CITA's training, education and scholarshipfund.
