Where is theLoyalty to Royalty?
Dear Sir,
We all so fervently declare when it comesto the Royal Family and especially our beloved Queen Elizabeth.I recently watched on the BBC and CNN the coverage of the Queen'sJubilee celebrations that took place in all of the British OverseasTerritories and Commonwealth countries.
Speeches, bonfires, fireworks, and specialevents were the common link between nations of British influence.Large countries and small Territories joined to celebrate 50 yearsof Queen Elizabeth on the throne of the British Empire.
We in Cayman, who praise England, the Queenand Royal Family almost every day in one way or another was conspicuouslyabsent in the world's joyous undertaking to make the Jubilee anevent all could be proud of.
I understand and acknowledge that one Governorwas leaving and another arriving as we approached the Jubileeweekend, but this is no excuse for our government to ignore sucha once- in-a-lifetime event in the reign of our Queen. What betterway to have our new Governor introduced to the people of Caymanthan to have him officiate over a local celebration event?
One cannot accept the excuse of budgetaryconstraints as a reason to withhold our show of loyalty to theQueen, as it was very evident we had money to spend on big partiesin New York and enough money to send two people to England tobe at Buckingham Palace celebrations. Why not something for usat home? Maybe it is a sign of the times that we are losing ourloyalty when England is experiencing a revival in love for theRoyal Family.
There are other signs that seem to showa trend of laxness in loyalty around us as well as seen by severalestablishments flying the Caymanian as well as the Union Jackflags upside down recently. When this disgrace occurs at a governmentproperty such as Pedro Castle one really begins to wonder whatis going on in Cayman. This travesty also has occurred at severalhotels and restaurants on West Bay road. It must be a real shockto our new Governor, Mr. Dinwiddy to see this lack of respectwhile driving along West Bay road from his residence to work inGeorge Town.
But rest assured Mr. Dinwiddy that theseexamples of indifference in no way reflect the feelings of themajority of the Caymanian people. Some of us think it was a realshame and a disgrace that our government chose to ignore the Queen'sJubilee and we would remind the powers that be that we are watching, and storing up the rudeness for a not too distant time in thefuture.
