New OfficersInstalled for Lions Club of Tropical Gardens

 

OutgoingPresident Patricia Bazell-Taylor MJF places the presidential pinon Incoming President Cynthia Chukwieze's lapel, under the guidanceof Past District Governor Lion Anthony Smatt PMJF.

The Lions Club of TropicalGardens held its annual Installation of Officers' Banquet on Saturday8th June 2002 at the Grand Pavilion, where Patricia Bazell-Taylorhanded over the presidential baton to Cynthia Chukwueze.

Lion Chukwueze is supportedby 1st Vice President - Gina Barnes, 2nd Vice President - DorothyGonzales, 3rd Vice President - Blanca Welds, Secretary - DeniseAshby and Treasurer - Ann Hunte, together with the club's fourdirectors, tamer, tail twister and membership director.

The President's theme for2002-03 is "With Service We Can Achieve All Things."

During the evening's proceedings,Lion Gina Barnes was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship, whichis the highest honor recognized by the Lions Clubs InternationalFoundation.

For accomplishments duringthe year 2001 to 2002, the Club was recognized for its hard work,dedication and service to the Cayman Islands community at themultiple-district convention, which was held in Jamaica in May.

The Club served the communityover the past year in many ways. During breast cancer awarenessmonth 700 vouchers were distributed, thereby enabling women toget free mammograms and the club assisted with the medical andtravel expenses of several cancer patients, who required overseastreatment.

Over 500 pairs of eyeglasseswere collected and sent to Lions International for recycling tothe under-privileged. The Lions Club of Tropical Gardens alsopaid for testing, lens and frames for several individuals locally.Recently, the club provided the Geriatric Wing of the Pines withtwo recliners. The Club also provides an annual scholarship fora student from the Young Parents' Program to attend the CommunityCollege.

The Lions Club of TropicalGarden's major project for the year was the After School program,which is operated at the Scranton Community Centre on Elgin Avenue.The club caters to approximately 50 children on a daily basis.The children are given meals and assistance with homework.

They are also encouragedto participate in activities, such as arts and crafts, and sports.This program has been very successful with the help of many volunteersand other service clubs.

The Lions are especiallygrateful for the sponsorship of the Bank of Butterfield.
