Doren Miller ­ Cayman'sBeloved Radio Personality 1925 - 2002

The former Deputy Director of Radio Cayman,Doren Miller passed away in Canada last Wednesday morning afterbeing in failing health for some time.

Born in the district of North Side in 1925,Doren served in the Cayman Islands Military Unit, 'Home Guardduring World War II and had a long career in radio and television,in Canada and the Cayman Islands.

He was on of the two original Caymaniansto seek a Radio and Television Broadcast License for the CaymanIslands in the 60s. He championed a free press.

Mr. Miller served as Senior Film Editorfor News and Documentaries at CBC Television in Canada in 1952through 1965, and then went on to be a major freelance editorfor documentaries and news features before returning to the CaymanIslands in the early 70s.

Once back, he took up his post at RadioCayman at the station's inception in 1976, serving as Senior NewsEditor and Deputy Director. He pioneered talk radio in the CaymanIslands, serving as Host and Producer of Cayman's original audienceparticipation talk programme, 'Open Line', from 1981 to 1993.

He produced the first full-length colourfilm on the Cayman Islands for the 1975 Festival of the Arts.The film was called "Upon the Seas." He was the principalEditor and Narrator on a video that celebrated the 150th Anniversaryof Parliamentary Government in the Cayman Islands in 1982.

His last historical documentation, amongthe many he produced, was Radio Cayman's 20th Century Perspective­ a five-hour documentary he produced, edited and narratedin 1999 for the Millennium celebrations.

Mr. Miller received the Cayman Islands Certificateand Badge of Honor in 1992 and retired from Radio Cayman in 1993.

Doren Miller is survived by brothers Lovine,Ned, Colburn, Rex and Brian, and sister Ruth Smith, as well astheir families.

Burial will be in Cayman at a date to beannounced.
