Texaco Donates US$10,000 toJr Achievement

Mr. James R. Tibbetts, General Manager ofTexaco Caribbean, Inc. presented Junior Achievement (JA) witha check for US$10,000.00, renewing Texaco's commitment to furtherthe education of the youth in the Cayman Islands in the operationsof business.

Mr. Tibbetts, who has served as Presidentof the JA Board of Directors since 1997, noted that Texaco Caribbeanhas been a supporter of JA since 1995 both financially and byproviding teams of advisors. "This is one of the most worthwhileventures which Texaco supports on the Island," Mr. Tibbettssaid. "We strongly believe in the objectives of JA to ensurethat every child in the Cayman Islands has a fundamental understandingof the free enterprise system. We feel that it not only benefitsthe achievers themselves but also local businesses in that wewill be recruiting employees who will have gained from their experiencein the JA programme," he added.

Founded in 1919, Junior Achievement is theoldest, largest, and fastest-growing business and economic not-for-profiteducation organisation in the world, involving over 1.5 millionstudents in over 80 countries. The Junior Achievement programmein the Cayman Islands was established in 1991 by the Rotary Clubof Grand Cayman Central and is managed by a volunteer Board ofDirectors.

In 1997 the Rotary Club of Grand CaymanCentral embarked on a joint venture with the Cayman Islands Chamberof Commerce to enable the programme to have a permanent officeand administrator, and expand its reach in the community.

Major financial support is currently providedby the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Central, the Cayman IslandsChamber of Commerce, and major business organisations on the Islandincluding Texaco Caribbean, Barclay's Bank, CIBC Bank and TrustCompany Ltd., Coutts (Cayman) Ltd., Cruseader International Group,Dresdner Bank, Esso Standard Oil, Island Companies and ScotiaBank.
