Sports at its Best
The trials for the Central American andCaribbean Championships have been completed and selections havebeen made to represent the Cayman Islands in the competition atFreeport, Bahamas from 6-7 July.
The two days of trials required that eachparticipant undertake particular runs, jumps and throws. Pointswere awarded for performance according to a predetermined scale.Composite scores denoted the rankings of individuals.
The highest overall scorers were chosento take part in Championships.
In the 10-11 age group, Cassianne Lawrencegained the highest total points for the girls, winning the longjump and the baseball throw and tying for first in the high jump.Anissa Owens placed second or third in all disciplines, thus attainingthe necessary score to attain the runner-up spot in this category.
Other participants in this group were VanessaBernard, Leanne Jarvis, Martin and Avril Myers.
For the boys, Sean Troup was victoriousin every event, while Perry Smith was almost as perfect in gainingrunner-up results, as the two attained the top places. Also takingpart were Mathew Wright, Tavis Webb and Rashad Rankin.
At the 12-13 levels, Opal Bodden and AnglinBradshaw turned in strong efforts on the second day of competitionto finish one-two for the girls. Kristie Hurlston was close behindthe two leaders and other entrants were Sheleese
Kelly, Amanda Hurlston and Kimberly Barnes.
On the male side of the ledger, Perry Anglinwon four of the six events, while Kamar Hyman took second in fourof his outings, thus assuring this pair the top spots in the 12-13boys scoring.
Additional competitors included MaxwellHyman, Tyrell Cuffey Junior Hinds, Eric Conner, Odayne Lynch andNoel Smith.
Race-walkers Shakeena Bush and Junior Hindswill participate in Freeport along with multi-even team membersCassianne Lawrence, Anissa Owens, Sean Troup, Perry Smith, OpalBodden, Anjuli Bradshaw, Perry Angkin and Kamar Hyman.
