Cayman plays Bahamas Bocce Team
This weekend, Special Olympics Cayman Islands(SOCI) is hosting a team of four athletes from the Bahamas inan invitational Bocce competition at the SOCI Bocce courts atthe Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
Preliminary competition starts on Friday16t March at 2:00 p.m., followed by an official Opening Ceremonyat 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, play commences at 10:00 a.m. and continuesto 6:00 p.m., with a break for lunch at noon.
The Cayman team comprises of Oral Powery,Mitchell "Mackie" Smith, Christopher Sampson, LeonardoBodden, Covington Ebanks and Daireen Powery.
Representing the Bahamas will be GeorginaButler, Renee Knowles and Nicola Gray, Shirley Morris (Coach)
Similar to lawn bowling, Bocce is a gameof skill and strategy. Each player is given two balls (boccia)and must then take turns rolling (lagging) the ball toward thepallino ball (the smaller ball), which has already been thrownonto the field. The players are given points for the balls thrownclosest to the pallino ball.
Players may also throw on the fly (volo),striking the ball to move the point ball. The balls of other playersmay also displace balls, including the pallino.
All are invited to welcome the athletesfrom Bahamas, and support Cayman's own athletes in their endeavors.Play promises to be intense and exciting, with several Unifiedgames included in the line-up.
