Cudos for Mr. WillJackson

Dear Sir:

Today, our society often seems to focuson the negative, and we do not accentuate positive things enough. The subject of brainpower or intellectual capital has been discussedin the past decade and the wealth of any organization or countrylies in its human resources.

Too often we tend to look outside our country for expert advice, and do not credit or recognises our own Caymanians as much aswe should. Here in Cayman, we have people with many talents andhidden skills, which contribute to the strength of our society. One such individual is Mr. Will Jackson. I am writing this letterto publicly acknowledge and thank him for his preservation ofCaymanian history and culture, and recommend that he be considereda 'national hero.' There are not too many Caymanians who writeabout our history and culture, or have their work published.

While I do not want to criticise Government for spending moneyon writing 'A History of the Cayman Islands,' Mr. Jackson hasdone a respectable job in his books and articles. We, as a country, should feel proud to have a Caymanian who has the interest andability to accomplish such a task. Think, wouldn't it be greatif our school children learnt Caymanian History from a Caymanian'sperspective? Heroes do not always come in the form of great athletes,or movie stars, but in simple men and women who have contributedto their society and country. If anyone is deserving of the 'NationalHero' status, it is Mr. Jackson, who typifies what being a Caymanianmeans. While success has many levels and meanings to people, inmy opinion, Mr. Jackson is a successful Caymanian.

Too often we send messages to our youth that to be successfulone needs to be a wealthy banker, lawyer, or doctor. However,we should teach them that success comes from within oneself, andit is a state of personal satisfaction, love and respect fromyour fellow man. I think all of these are characteristics of Mr.Jackson and he certainly deserves to be considered our 'NationalHero.'

Mike Jackson
