Professor Rex Nettlefordwho will be leading the CNCF Symposium on Culture during Cayfest.

Educators, cultural aficionados and artistsin the Cayman Islands will get a treat on 2 April, when the Universityof the West Indies (UWI) vice-chancellor, Professor Hon. Rex NettlefordOM, FIJ, will deliver a lecture on "Creative Diversity, theDefining Point of the Caribbean."

The lecture has been organized especiallyfor Cayfest by the Cayman National Cultural Foundation. Whilehere, the professor is also expected to cal on the Minister ofEducation, Human Resources and Culture, Hon. Roy Bodden.

Professor Nettleford is a well-known Caribbeanscholar, trade union educator, social and cultural historian andpolitical analyst. A former Rhodes scholar, he completed an undergraduatedegree in history at the UWI and pursued post-graduate studiesin politics at Oxford.

He is the founder, artistic director andprincipal choreographer of the internationally acclaimed NationalDance Theatre Company of Jamaica and is regarded as a leadingCaribbean authority on the performing arts. Outside the Caribbeanhe has served on several international bodies having to do withdevelopment and intercultural learning.

According to CNCF Artistic Director, Mr.Henry Muttoo, "there is, perhaps, no one in the Caribbeanwho understands and is able to articulate the political, cultural,artistic and social complexity of the region, like Professor Nettleford.

"His long and distinguished careeras an educator, practicing artist, trade unionist and culturaladvisor to governments and prime ministers, as well as his oratoricalskills, puts him in a class of rare individuals. We are fortunateto have him address us," Mr. Muttoo said.
