QualifyingLaw Degree Status Confirmed

Following a two-day visit by representativesof the English Law Society and Bar Council, the status of theCayman Island Law School's LL.B (conferred by the University ofLiverpool) has been confirmed.

This confirmation means that graduates ofthe Law School will continue to be able to enter professionaltraining for qualification as an English barrister or solicitoron the same terms as graduates in the UK.

During the visit, Mr. Nigel Bastin of theBar Council and Mr. Mark Pardoe of the Law Society met with staffand students and looked at the school's resources. They also metwith the Chief Justice, the Hon.

Anthony Smellie, QC, JP; the Attorney General,the Hon. David Ballantyne; and other members of the legal community.

Commenting on the visit, Mr. Bastin, whois the head of education and training at the Bar Council, said,"We have no hesitation in confirming the status of the CaymanIslands Law School Law degree. We are satisfied that the degreeis being taught at the appropriate level and that the students'experience and achievements are of comparable standards to thosestudying in the UK.

"We have been impressed by the dedicationand commitment of the staff, led by the Director of Legal StudiesMitchell Davies, the enthusiasm of the students and the supportfor the school in the local legal community. We are confidentthat with the continuing support of the Cayman Islands Government,the school will go from strength to strength."
