A Sneak Previewat Earth Week 2002

Every year, Earth Day is celebrated internationallyon April 22nd. This year's slogan is, "Protect Our Home our source of sustenance and our lifeline to the future."The Cayman Islands is once again using Earth Day to kick off EarthWeek 2002, from Monday, April 22nd to Sunday, April 28th. An excitingweek of activities is planned for all three islands:
· School activities include paintingoutdoor garbage cans (sponsored by Vibe 98.9); creating schoolpledges for Earth Day; school yard clean ups;
· "Don't Spoil With Oil Recycle" campaign, sponsored by John Gray Recyclers
· Marine Debris Study & CleanUp at Grape Tree Point, sponsored John Gray Recyclers.
· Educational Forum with video/slideshow and/or guest speakers from the Department of Environment,the National Trust, and the Department of Environmental Health
· Marine Turtle Monitoring Program
· Cloth shopping bags sponsored byFoster's Food Fair IGA
· Roadside Clean up, sponsored byChamber of Commerce
· Beach Clean Up, sponsored by NationalTrust & the Department of Environmental Health (DEH)
· Reef Watch Survey, sponsored byDepartment of Environment and CITA
· Back to Nature 5k Fun Run/Walk,sponsored by the National Trust
· Wetland's Cruise #5, sponsoredby the National Trust & Dive Tech
· Botanic Park - free resident day
· Various clean up activities heldthroughout the week by businesses and volunteer groups
Everyone is invited to participate in theseactivities. A special invitation is also extended to all businessesto clean up their grounds and parking lot areas during Earth Week.This year, a special emphasis has been made to offer either anenvironmentally friendly cloth shopping bag or a T-shirt to participatingvolunteers. Details on the above activities and how to registerwill be widely promoted in April. If you or your company is planninga special clean up, we want to hear about it!
