Swimmers Stepup a Notch

Two National Team squads were announcedby National Coach Dave Kelsheimer at the Texaco Swim meet heldthis month as the sport of swimming takes another step forwardin the world arena.

First the National Junior Team, comprisingan unprecedented 22 athletes, will represent the Islands at theCarifta Swimming Championships in Barbados 11 to 14 April. Thesenior National Team of 2 top athletes will participate in the6th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Moscow from 3 to7 April.

Travelling to the 6th FINA World Championshipswill be athletes Andrew Mackay and Heather Roffey, National CoachDave Kelsheimer and a team manager. This is a large step for theseathletes, who put in hours of training to attain the superiorstandard of swimming that qualified them for this World Classevent. They will be competing against World Champions from therecent FINA Swimming World Cup 2001/2002 series where 21 WorldRecords were achieved and Olympians from the 2000 Games as wellas those aiming for Greece in 2004.

Athletes are expected to gather from a record102 countries for this event and other Caribbean countries therewill be Barbados, Cuba, the Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republicand Trinidad and Tobago.

The World Championships team will leaveCayman to travel to Moscow via London 29 March.

What is next for Cayman Swimming? As theNational Coach, Dave Kelsheimer put it concluding his commentsafter announcing the teams, "No Peace 'til Greece".
