Who Killed Miss Che Che?

An Autobiography

Episode 39: A Startling Confession

Monday, 13th December 1982

I stayed at Niki's a short while longer and left in a hurry. I immediately went to the place in the bush where my rifle was hidden.

I checked her, 3 shots were missing from the magazine! I smelled powder in the barrel! She had been discharged! I thought of going to the police but what if Mike and Jeff turned on me? Which they probably would do, no doubt, if I went to the police. Plus, the rifle belonged to me. How could I explain that? I was part of it because I had stupidly lent them my rifle.

So I hid her in a different place and swore never again would anyone touch her, not even John or Duke. I hid the money too. I decided I had to see them and talk to them. The news was beginning to spread.

I left the clothes where they were but later that day I moved them to my room and placed them in bags. I would move them someplace else later. I then went to look for Mike and Jeff with rage in my eyes and fury in my mind and anger in my heart for them. I got to Jeff's home first. He was still sleeping but I got his granny to wake him up, saying it was important that I see him immediately. He came outside with sleep in his eyes.

"Miss Che Che was killed last night. Did you know?"

"No. Where you heard it?"

I told him Nicole had told me, that people were saying that she was shot. "Jeff, my gun was discharged last night. I checked her before I came here. Three of her shots are missing. Her barrel smells of powder!"

"I discharged her and Mike fired her off too," he shrugged.

"Let's go see Mike and have a talk." I could see thoughts were on Jeff's mind; something was bothering him.

We found Mike outside feeding his brother's chickens in his backyard. I told him about the gun being fired, the missing shots, the gunpowder smell and about Miss Che Che. The first thing said was "Boy, I not even gone sleep yet."

I asked him about Miss Che Che. He denied it and got me mad as hell. I said, "We are friends Mike, remember?"
Mike looked at Jeff who was looking at him. "Jeff, let's tell Abna. I know him and he won't talk."

Jeff agreed to Mike's judgment. "Okay. But let me tell it." He started by saying, "After we left you that you had told me where the gun was me and Mike went to the spot and found her. Mike tried to get the shots out but could not. I tried and could not. So we decided to carry her with the shots in her. And like we said last night, just for show of force. And if necessary, fire a shot in the air to scare him because we had planned to rob another guy Mike knew who owned a store.

"Because we never thought of robbing Miss Che Che. I didn't even know who she was until we got by her place and Mike said, 'let's check out Miss Che Che first,' because she had a store and probably has a lot of money in the house. I didn't know who Che Che was man, because I only just got here.

"Anyways, we went around the back. The place was black. I started to take out window levers from the bathroom window with a screwdriver that I had carried along. I had got two levers out when the light in the bathroom went on. It scared the hell out of me and I jumped back from the window. Mike was standing off holding the gun in his left hand.

"I went back to the window and peeped in. I saw a lady standing in the bathroom door holding a pistol in her hand and looking towards the window. I beckoned to Mike and he came to the window, looked in and said, 'That's her. That's Miss Che Che'. Because I didn't know who she was.

"She then said to the window, 'You come in here tonight, I have something for you'. I then thought to myself, this lady thinks she's tough but I got something for her too. I then took the gun from Mike.

"I was mad because she had woke up and had a gun to shoot me with. I rested the barrel of the gun on the windowsill.

At that moment she switched the light off and left the bathroom, closing the door. I took the gun down and asked Mike to go to the other place and come back here later. Mike said okay so we started to leave by going around the right side of the house and store when we heard a shot go off.

"It scared the both of us off the ground. We jumped and almost ran. This all happened in a matter of minutes after we got to the house. The shot had come from the front of the house.

"'Jesse! Jesse!' The lady was shouting for someone. I asked Mike who was Jesse? He said, 'Her brother who lives in that house there' and pointed. We could see the house. It was right next to her house, a fence between. I saw the house earlier but never asked Mike who lived there."

Suddenly, I interrupted Jeff's story. "Did you kill that woman?"

"Wait, I'm coming to that," Jeff said. He continued: "We heard her call Jesse! Jesse! Again. We heard the fence being shook and we ran behind the bush in the backyard where we could still see both houses but we couldn't see the lady.

We didn't hear no more shots though. It had to be her gun that went off. We watched the two houses and no lights went on in her brother's house. We heard no more yelling. It was quiet now.

"We waited for about a half hour. We didn't want to leave yet because someone might have heard and was looking outside. We would check her later. By then it was getting pretty early in the morning around 3:00 am."

I was anxious to hear what happened so I asked Jeff get to the point.

"We are getting to that now," Jeff said. "Me and Mike went back to the bathroom window. Mike was holding the rifle. No lights were on; her brother must have not heard her. No one was outside. He must be still sleeping, I thought. We had no intentions to do what really happened Abna. Listen.

"When we got to the window, I started to take out a third lever of glass but before I got it out the light came back on and she must have been listening inside and waiting. I saw her standing in the door again holding the gun in her right hand.

I got so fucking mad man!"

He looked at Mike and continued. "'You come back again, I still got some thing here for you if you come in here tonight,' she said. I jerked the gun out of Mike's hand, rested the barrel on the windowsill and took aim at her forehead. I was mad as hell and pulled the trigger! The shot "

But I stopped him and stood up. I looked at him hard. Mike was staring at me, worried. "Jeff, you are a damn fool!"
