DOT hires Cuban It has come to our attention that a numberof Caymanians who applied for the vacant post at the Miami officeof the Department of Tourism (DOT), have been overlooked in favourof a long-term Thrifty Car Rental marketing executive, Manny Gonzalez.

This vacancy came about earlier this year with the departure ofthe previous Manager, Peter Shiels
During an interview with Cayman Net News last month, the Ministerof Tourism confirmed that of the 53 employees on staff at theDOT - only two - one in 25 were Caymanian.

It is understood that a number of Caymanians, some with previousairline management, sales and marketing experience applied forthe post. In a related Tourism Industry article for this issue- one recent University graduate is getting ready to go on tostudy for his Bachelors ... while another is still waiting toget a job commensurate with his experience.

The idea of a fully-operational Hotel Training school ... to beoperated from a purpose-built actual hotel, has been addressedfor several years. As a matter of fact, the Ten-Year Tourism DevelopmentPlan for the period 1992 - 2002 - that Government paid so handsomelyfor several years ago - addressed the need for Caymanians to getinvolved "at all levels" of this important industry.

It has also been suggested that the time has come for Governmentto re-examine whether or not Grand Cayman could afford to accommodateyet another hotel. It is estimated, because of the trickle-downrequirements, that it takes at least three persons to servicea hotel room. Therefore, a 300-room hotel will require 1000 newpersons working for that hotel.

That's a lot of imported bodies.
