On Saturday, June 17th at 1:45p.m. Cayman will be at the dawn of a new era in competitive sport,when an attempt will be made to establish a world's open-waterrecord for a mile.
This event has been eight years in the making, rousing the dedicationof local and international bankers and swimming organizations.The Flowers Mile has been reviewed by Swim World Magazine as oneof the "top three fun swims in the world."
This year with over 70 random prizes including 10 British AirwaysTickets (Nassau, Bahamas and London), 22 Cayman Airways Tickets,Atlantis Dives, Red Sails Sports activities, Cash prizes and Dinnersat Cayman's Top Restaurants - one in every six finishers is guaranteedone of these random prizes. The team at Flowers has employed elaborate strategies this yearto attract participation from local residents and visitors alike.The Swim caters to amateurs and professionals, which has causedparticipation to expand from 50 to 301 swimmers last year.
"Our swim more that doubles the numbers of any water sports"boasts organizer Frank Flowers.
For the professional division there is a $6,000 purse for anymale/female to establish a world record. The 1st male/female tocross the finish line will receive $1,000. The purses, courtesyof Cayman National Bank has encouraged world-class athletes fromNorth America, the United Kingdom, South Africa and AustraliaStates to make Grand Cayman a part of their summer schedule.
Trophies in each age group have attracted a healthy level of on-islandcompetition from age six to 60-plus. For the amateur contenders,the Flowers Mile ensures every finisher is a winner; receivinga medal, T-shirt and surprises from Coca-Cola/PowerAde, The Brasserieand Flowers Bottled Water.
The 2000 swim was made possible by local businesses who supportthe development of swimming in the Cayman Islands: Cayman NationalBank, British Airways, Cayman Airways, Coco Cola/PowerAde, RedSails, Nike and the Flowers Group.
The registration fee of C.I. $15.00 will be donated to the NationalSwim Team in their effort to send the National Swim Team to theOlympics. Same day registration at the Ritz Carlton site willbegin at 1: 45 p.m. with a massive beach party at the Royal Palmsfinish line, expected to begin at 4:00 p.m.
